By the end of the day on March 5, we signed off on the preamble to the contract and five articles, including Orientation, Transportation Allowance, and Resignation among others.
We also had discussions about a number of working conditions that affect your life on and off the clock, including Probationary Period, Job Performance, Discipline & Discharge and Management Rights.
In particular, we proposed a new Management Rights clause, similar to many AUPE agreements: “the Employer exercises rights and responsibilities as management, which are subject to the terms of this Collective Agreement.”
This language would allow the employer to continue overseeing operations and making managerial decisions while respecting our union as an equal party to the collective agreement, so we can properly represent you at the table and on the worksite.
We hope the Good Samaritan Society recognizes this amendment is both reasonable and respectful. The purpose of a collective agreement is to help create a more equal workplace; you can’t do this if the agreement just reinstates the power employers are automatically granted with their title, as the current Management Rights article does.
