A respectful tone and signed articles kick off negotiations
Your negotiating team met with Northern Lakes College on March 3 and 4. We had productive conversations to begin bargaining for our new collective agreement. Overall, the tone was open and respectful.
The employer did not include wage and benefit adjustments in their opening proposal, but this was not unexpected. We are a long way from completing work on our non-monetary proposals and beginning the process of bargaining for wages.
We signed off on 16 articles without changes and three more articles with only minor updates.
Other issues
Onboarding new members - we proposed giving Chapter representatives the opportunity to participate in onboarding new employees. Our role in onboarding would be to let our new members know what their rights are under the collective agreement and explain how AUPE works.
Sick note requirement - we discussed removing the requirement to provide sick notes after three wellness days. We argued that the sick note requirement puts unnecessary pressure on our members because of limited access to health care providers in the north.
Probationary period - we began discussions on the probationary and trial periods for members who transfer from one position to another within the college.
Survey coming soon
We want to hear from you––your feedback is vital to the bargaining process. We will be sending you a short survey for you to complete in the coming weeks. Watch your email and have your say in bargaining.
Next meetings
We are scheduled to meet with Northern Lakes College again on April 23 and 24.
Please contact a member of your negotiating team if you have any questions or feedback about this bargaining update.
