You have earned the respect of Albertans
The COVID-19 outbreak at the Calgary Correctional Centre has been a challenging time for all of you who work there.
Your union is proud of the work you do and particularly proud of the dedication to your jobs during this difficult time.
You have shown up for work to keep the inmates, fellow workers and all Albertans safe despite the real risk it means to you and your families.
You have endured isolation from your extended families, your friends and your communities to keep others safe.
Many of you have been infected. We wish you full and quick recoveries.
You deserve the thanks of all Albertans.
We know that the public respects the work you do. That is why there was such a big media interest in the outbreaks and the need for safety at your workplace.
The reasons for our work with the media, responding to many calls from reporters and issuing a media release, was to ensure that the employer and the government were doing all they could to support you.
It was after our media release went out that the employer announced that casual workers would be given 10 days of isolation pay. Normally, casuals don’t get that – or any sick leave. If they don’t work, they don’t get paid.
This has been an opportunity for AUPE executives and staff to work with members of Local 003 employed at the Calgary Correctional Centre.
We look forward to having more conversations and offering support when you need it.
