Negotiations hampered by government interference

AUPE members employed at Medicine Hat College have voted to ratify a new collective agreement with the employer.

The new contract was proposed by an independent mediator. Your negotiating team reluctantly recommended members vote to accept the terms.

The mediator was guided by other recent contracts in post-secondary institutions in Alberta. Negotiations across the sector were hampered by the Government of Alberta imposing a mandate on employers that limited their ability to bargain freely.

Legislation passed in 2019 meant that the government could withhold funding from employers who ignored the mandate.

If you have questions, please contact a member of your negotiating team.
