The committee will attend a June 28 rally at the Alberta legislature in Edmonton and pride parades in Lethbridge on June 22 and Calgary on Sept. 1.

“This year is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which broke out on June 28, 1969, when New York police raided the Stonewall Inn to harass and arrest same-sex couples and members of the LGBTQ2+ community,” said AUPE vice president and chair of the union’s Human Rights Committee Karen Weiers.

“These protests have been described as the beginning of the North American LGBTQ2+ liberation movement and it’s important we all stay dedicated to supporting inclusion and equality for everyone.

“The Human Rights Committee is proud to participate in events around Alberta that promote understanding and acceptance, and that celebrate members of the LGBTQ2+ community,” Weiers said.

Pride events begin in Edmonton on June 8. Details can be found here.
