Wage re-opener talks begin

Text only block

On Jan. 24, your bargaining team met with the employer to begin talks for our wage re-opener, which we negotiated into the current collective agreement to allow for wage increases in 2019 -2020.

Like many of the Alberta boards, agencies, and post-secondary institutions whose employees are AUPE members, the AGLC is following the UCP’s direction and proposing a 2-per-cent rollback to our wages in the third-year of our collective agreement (retroactive to Aug. 1, 2019).

The agency said staff turnover is low and employee satisfaction is high, so they’re not concerned a wage reduction will have any negative effect on staff retention, recruitment or morale. We say that if the AGLC wants to retain the hardworking employees who keep their operations going by providing excellent service to stakeholders and the public, they should treat us with respect and give us the resources we need to do our jobs well and take care of our families.

Cost of living is rising in Alberta, up 2.1-per-cent year over year for 2019, and for our dedication and years of service we deserve a wage that will allow us to maintain our standard of living. Your bargaining team will be filing for arbitration after Jan. 31 and will continue to fight for a fair wage increase moving forward.
