The 74 nursing care staff who work at the home join their coworkers from three other care facilities owned and operated by the same private, for profit company, who banded together back in November to organize their Edmonton-based worksites.
“To see such a strong show of solidarity span cities is inspiring,” said AUPE Vice-President and Health Care Aide Bonnie Gostola.
“Staff at Eau Claire are part of the same fight as their sister sites, and the more voices they have behind their collective cause, the stronger they’ll be as a group.”
Chartwell Retirement Residences operate seniors’ care homes Canada-wide. The AUPE members providing care at their Edmonton and Calgary facilities specialize in memory care, assisted living and supportive living services.
Eau Claire staff are looking to improve their working conditions and secure more resources for the frontlines, so they can continue to support their communities through their work.
“Seniors’ care workers know firsthand quality care starts with a tight-knit community,” adds Gostola.
“By joining Alberta’s largest union and standing with their working neighbours across the province, the employees at Eau Claire have made Alberta’s seniors care community, and the seniors care community at home in Calgary, that much stronger.”
