“The province of Alberta formally recognized Black History Month only two years ago,” said Karen Weiers, AUPE Vice-President and chair of the union’s Human Rights Committee. “Today, we are all proud to celebrate this important time with our sisters, brothers, and fellow workers.
“Stories of black history have always been an important part of our collective past, from John Ware, who came to these lands in 1882, to railway workers in the 1900s who organized with support from the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and to each and every member of the black community who calls Alberta home today.”
Weiers also noted the importance of preserving this history.
“Black History Month is a time to celebrate our rich and diverse history. It needs to be shared and never forgotten, so that all Albertans see themselves reflected in our province’s past.” she said.
The Human Rights Committee encourages AUPE members and all Albertans to attend Black History Month events in their communities and participate in this important annual observance.
AUPE is Alberta’s largest union. Its 95,000 members are celebrating 100 years of solidarity in 2019.
