Many workers, including AUPE members, have never been on strike before. So what happens when you go on strike? What is expected of you when you are walking the strike line?
Here are some tips and ground rules to expect when you’re on strike.
We are training and scheduling Strike Captains to be on every line to help coordinate every strike line. Your Strike Captains are there to support you and liaise with HQ. They will help seek answers to your questions.
Spread Solidarity
- It is going to take a lot of heart and courage to win the wage increases and working conditions we need and deserve.
- Everyone should contribute to keeping up morale. Sing songs, wave at passing cars, bring gifts for your coworkers – every gesture helps.
- Always be respectful. We might not always agree on strikes and strategy, but respecting our fellow AUPE members is the starting point for solidarity.
- Have fun! We are on strike to send a powerful message, but that does not mean it’s all serious all the time.
Welcome guests and the public
- Is someone you don’t recognize joining the strike line? Treat them with respect, too!
- News reporters, managers, and police officers often visit strike lines. But so do members of the public who want to support you.
- If a news reporter, manager, police officer, or someone who does not support the strike asks to speak with you, politely direct them to the nearest Strike Captain or AUPE Staff Member.
- There is no tolerance for discrimination such as sexism, racism, homophobia, body-shaming, and ableism. There is also no tolerance for any illegal or violent actions.
- Do not litter. If your strike line does not have enough garbage cans, volunteer to help get one.
- Do not smoke next to other people unless you have their permission.
Remember that some AUPE members will be designated to work during a strike. This all depends on your Essential Services Agreement.
If an AUPE member crosses the strike line, ensure they are designated to work. Otherwise, encourage them to join the strike line.
Volunteer!
- Strikes are a lot of work. Volunteers are always appreciated.
- Some easy ways to volunteer include:
- Picking up coffee.
- Bringing hand-warmers or sunscreen, and even
- Offering free childcare for fellow members and their families.
- Talk to your Strike Captain to find out how you can lend a hand.
