Tentative agreement defeated; back to the table or on to mediation?
Thank you to everyone who came and voted this afternoon. With 59 members voting, there were 23 votes in favour and 36 against. Therefore, the tentative agreement is not ratified.
What does this mean?
We will be requesting to immediately get back to the table with the Employer and attempt to seek a better deal. As noted previously, we believe the Employer will decline and seek third party mediation to get us out of our impasse. We will move through the mediation process and at the end the mediator will write their report with their recommendations for settlement. What we are seeing across the sector is the identical monetary deal that was just defeated with today's vote.
If this is the case, our next option is job action/strike. An Essential Services Agreement must be negotiated and registered with the Alberta Labour Relations Board prior to any potential strike vote or lockout. The goal at mediation is to get a deal that is better than the one we voted on and defeated today. With the mandate the government has imposed on post-secondary institutions, we are not optimistic.
We will keep you informed as we move through the process. Thank-you again to all who voted today.
