Legal Aid: Delays and deadlock at the bargaining table

Update for Local 118 Chapter 019, Legal Aid

Jan 16, 2025

Text only block

Your negotiating team met with Legal Aid on January 15 to continue bargaining. Unfortunately, Legal Aid is dragging their feet and causing delay after delay.

We have now reached an impasse on non-monetary matters. In other words, Legal Aid has refused to accept our proposals like improving the language we use to talk about working from home, and we cannot agree to their proposed changes like extended hours of work.

We also have not been able to move forward on monetary bargaining for higher wages, increased benefits, and other monetary proposals because Legal Aid has yet to table their monetary proposals.

We told Legal Aid to prepare their monetary proposals all the way back in October. Instead, they cancelled our November meeting dates and were still unprepared when we met on January 15. They say they will not be ready for February, either.

Your team wants to get on with it. We believe bargaining for higher wages and benefits is what members urgently deserve. Some of our newest members don’t have steps for their wages yet. We also don’t know what Legal Aid wants to propose for job descriptions and rates of pay for these new members.

We made our concerns clear, and Legal Aid assured us they would be ready when we meet on March 11 and 12.
