AHS plans to privatize 428 laundry jobs
Alberta Health Services has officially begun the process for privatizing the remainder of public laundry services. They continue to fall in line with Premier Kenney’s plan to destroy public health care in Alberta.
AHS opened a Request for Proposals (RFP) today (October 23), inviting private business to take over laundry services across the province. They expect to pick a vendor by March 15, 2021. This scheme is projected to upend the lives of nearly 428 AHS GSS AUPE members.
By directing AHS to move forward with this plan, Premier Jason Kenney is proving he wants to corrode your working conditions, pay, benefits, hours, and more. Privatization also results in lower quality services, as staff are forced to cut corners to create profit for the private owners.
We must prepare to fight back
What happens next is in your hands. You and your colleagues need to talk about what you are willing to do to fight back against this government and stop their cruel ideological agenda and cuts.
Tell your family, friends, and neighbours about what is happening to health care and all public services in this province. Show them just how much this government is hurting Albertan families.
Laundry workers and all General Support Services members are crucial to delivering quality, safe public health care. The pandemic has proven AHS needs us.
AUPE members have a strong history of fighting for hospital laundry services, and we’re not going to back down from this attack on our livelihoods and the services Albertans depend on.
