Revera McConachie Gardens: Tell the arbitrator what we need!

Update for Local 047 Chapter 058, Revera McConachie Gardens

Mar 16, 2023

Important survey on March 29 and 30

Text only block

As we told you in our last update, we are nearing the end of the process to have our first collective agreement in place.

After initially rejecting our proposal, Revera eventually agreed to speed up the process by skipping mediation and going straight to arbitration. The arbitration hearing will be held on April 6, 10, 11 and 12.

The arbitrator, Mia Norrie, will conduct the hearing. She will listen to the arguments from both sides (AUPE and Revera) and then impose a binding decision as to what our collective agreement will look like.

It is vital she clearly understands just how difficult and demanding our jobs are, how painful it’s been working through the COVID-19 pandemic, and how hard it is to keep staff at McConachie because of the lack of fair compensation, sick time and other problems.

We want to stay and make McConachie a great place to work, but many more will keep leaving if the arbitrator doesn’t award a collective agreement with improved sick time, shift premiums as well as a wage increase that recognizes the difficulty and risk of our jobs.

Help us send that message to the arbitrator by participating in an important survey.

You can fill out the survey at work (in the staff room) on the following dates and times*:

  • Wednesday, March 29
    • 6:30 am – 8:30 am
    • 1 pm – 5 pm
  • Thursday, March 30
    • 6:30 am – 8:30 am
    • 1 pm – 5 pm

*Please ensure you are only completing the survey on non-work time, such as on a break, before/after your shift or on a day off.

If you are unable to take the survey at the worksite at these times, please let us know and we will make other arrangements. It is vital that everyone provide us with current contact information (phone/email) if you haven’t already so that we can make sure that everyone has an opportunity to participate and complete the survey.

These are the questions you will be asked in the survey:

  1. In the past 12 months, have you applied for another job? Yes/No
  2. If the Arbitrator rules to not include improved sick time or shift premiums or a wage increase reflective of the difficulty and risk of our jobs, are you likely to look for other employment? Yes/No

The survey results will give us the concrete evidence we need to prove to the arbitrator what we already know—that Revera has created a revolving door staffing situation that hurts both staff and residents at McConachie.

Have your say and help send a message loud and clear that we need a fair collective agreement so staff will choose to stay long-term!

Please do not hesitate to contact your negotiating team with any questions or comments you may have.
