Frustration with U of L at the bargaining table

Bargaining update for Local 053, University of Lethbridge

Nov 14, 2024

Informal mediation begins in November

Text only block

Your negotiating team continued bargaining with the University of Lethbridge on Oct. 16, 17, 28, and 29.

The employer said we needed to finish non-monetary bargaining before they share their monetary proposals. We expect to receive these proposals at our next meeting.

Your negotiating team decided to apply for informal mediation. Mediator Rick Wilson has been appointed by the Provincial Mediation Services Office and will join our next bargaining meetings on Nov. 18 and 19.

The key non-monetary issues we are focussed on are Article 29 – Vacations, and Article 32 – Job Postings and Transfers.

There is a lot to fix with Article 29, including proper seniority recognition for vacation, an early submission process, and denied vacations.

With Article 32, our main concern is the job posting process. The current article dealing with job postings does not ensure members are notified when their application for promotion is unsuccessful. It also lacks language that instructs members on how to improve their skills to strengthen their application for future job postings.

We also tabled new language addressing seniority rights in Article 32. This would allow members to grieve the employer’s decision to disregard your seniority during job competitions.

Your negotiating team is very frustrated with the employer’s response to our demands on Articles 29 and 32. We plan to raise our concerns again during the informal mediation sessions in November. Please remember to fill out and return your survey on these issues, your input is very important to the process.
