AUPE MEDIA RELEASE: AUPE President Guy Smith issues statement in solidarity with Alberta doctors
EDMONTON – Guy Smith, President of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), issued the following statement in solidarity with Alberta’s physicians after the UCP government tore up their funding contract with the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) yesterday (Feb. 20):
“Health Minister Tyler Shandro’s decision to rip up a contract, bypass negotiations, and impose the will of the state on Alberta’s doctors sets a dangerous precedent and has Albertans outraged,” says Smith.
“Once again, the UCP government has strong-armed hardworking Albertans and used their political power to steamroll the heart, brain, and backbone of our health care system. AUPE members aren’t going to sit back and watch.
“AUPE is the largest health care union in Alberta, and we work alongside physicians every single day as part of a holistic health care team supporting and caring for Albertans across the province.
“If the government thinks it can come after Alberta’s physicians just because they don’t have union protection, then all 97,000 members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees will stand in solidarity with our doctors and all health care providers.”
