AUPE convention delegates elect new leadership team

AUPE convention delegates have elected a new executive team as the union faces some of the toughest challenges in its 100-year history.

“Make no mistake, AUPE is ready to face these challenges head on and our members have picked a great team to lead this fight,” says Guy Smith, who was acclaimed to continue his role as president, a position he has held for 10 years.

“We know that the vital publics services our members deliver to Albertans are under attack. We know that the rights of all workers are under attack. We also know that we have the strength and commitment to fight back against those attacks on behalf of all Albertans,” he says.

The election of a new executive team took place at the union’s 43rd convention in Edmonton today (Friday, Oct. 18).

The results are:

  • President: Guy Smith (acclaimed)
  • Secretary-Treasurer: Jason Heistad (re-elected)
  • Vice-Presidents:
    • Kevin Barry (newly elected);
    • Bobby-Joe Borodey (newly elected);
    • Mike Dempsey (re-elected);
    • Bonnie Gostola (re-elected)
    • Susan Slade (re-elected); and
    • Karen Weiers (re-elected)
       

AUPE’s new executive team will be at today’s Cutback? Fightback! rally at the steps of the Legislature from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. today.
