EDMONTON—The president of Alberta's largest union congratulates Premier Danielle Smith on her government’s re-election.
"As a union of more than 95,000 public and private sector employees in Alberta, we look forward to working with Premier Smith, her government, and all recently elected Members of the Legislative Assembly," says Guy Smith, President of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).
President Smith also extends his congratulations to Hon. Rachel Notley, who will continue to serve the people of Alberta as the Official Opposition Leader.
"I have had the honour of building positive relationships with six previous premiers," says Smith. "Although there was much we disagreed on, I know how important it is to have respectful and open dialogue with elected leaders."
Regardless of which party forms government, AUPE has always advocated for better working conditions, benefits, and wages for its members and all Albertans, as well as increased investment in the public services we all rely on.
"We have seen the devastating effects that budget cuts and the privatization of services has had on workers in this province," says Smith. "We will ensure that message is heard in the premier’s office."
Approximately 50,000 health care members, 10,000 education members, and 21,000 government service members—many of whom are women and racialized workers—will soon enter contract negotiations with the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services, post-secondary institutions, and numerous Boards and Agencies.
"We hope the government is willing to focus on our key concerns when we enter negotiations," says Smith. "Albertans are struggling. They deserve wages that match the rising cost of living, an end to the short-staffing crisis on the front lines, a reversal of contracting out and service privatization, and improved working conditions."
