Rallies are one of our most powerful tools – a clear step up from smaller, less intense actions.
But, as many of us know, with great power comes great responsibility.
The whole point of organizing ‘Time for Action’ bargaining rallies across the province is to turn up the heat on our employers, to show them we demand better at the bargaining table.
Naturally, our employers may look for ways to silence us.
So, what are the rules around rallies and what do you do if your employer tries to shut it down?
The main thing to remember is that you have a RIGHT to rally.
There are only three simple rules to follow to make sure your employer remains powerless to interrupt your rally:
- Make sure you are on public property, like a sidewalk, NOT on employer property.
- Keep an eye on your surroundings. Don't block entrances or exits to the worksite or surrounding buildings.
- Join the rally before work, after work, on days off or on breaks. Do not attend a rally during your employer-paid work time. If you attend on your break, don’t stay for too long!
- Some collective agreements may say you must stay onsite during your paid break. Be sure to check!
- If your manager tells you that you cannot leave the worksite on your break, call the AUPE Member Resource Centre at 780-930-3300 and explain the details of the situation.
A union steward’s golden rule is: Obey now, grieve later.
There is power in numbers and in knowing your rights. At the end of the day, an employer may try to find ways to silence you, but you have a right to rally and fight for respect.
