Alberta’s UCP government wants to take our jobs, our dedication, our commitment to patients and sell them off to the highest bidder.
What does this mean for us, the nearly 3,000 AUPE members who work for Capital Care and Carewest?
It means that our reward for years or decades of hard work could be:
- Lower levels of care for the patients and residents we love;
- The loss of our jobs;
- Having to reapply for our jobs at lower wages and benefits; and
- No longer being a member of a secure defined-benefit pension plan that gives us retirement security.
Selling off Capital Care and Carewest means corporations will make money, but workers will lose money and jobs and residents will lose quality of life. Indeed, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen that public health facilities are more likely to keep residents alive than privately run facilities.
