AUPE members urged to attend Join Together education rally – Calgary members should reserve bus seats now
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees encourages members to participate in the Join Together Alberta rally against cuts to education funding scheduled for Saturday, March 20.
The rally will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a march from the Shaw Conference Centre to the Legislature Grounds, arriving at 1 p.m. The AUPE bus will go to the Shaw Centre.
However, marches will also be departing from MacEwan University and the intersection of 105th Street and 104th Avenue, both at 12:45 p.m., arriving at the Legislature at the same time.
AUPE plans to provide a bus from Calgary, stopping in Red Deer, for members in those areas who would like to attend the rally. The bus will depart from the northeast corner of the parking lot at Calgary’s Deerfoot Mall, 901 – 64th Ave., at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Loading at 8:15 a.m.
The bus will depart Red Deer’s Holiday Inn Express, 2803 – 50 Ave., at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Loading at 10:15 a.m.
To take the bus, AUPE members must contact the AUPE Executive Office at 1-800-232-7284, press 1, 780-930-3326 or email at mguido@aupe.org by the close of business on Wednesday, March 17.
The rally is being organized by Join Together Alberta, a coalition of unions, community organizations and individuals concerned about the impacts that deep cuts to public services will have on individuals, families and communities within Alberta.
The rally was called in response to cuts of more than 30 per cent to the budget for educational facilities, significant cuts in student grants and cuts to university budgets that could result in a 10-per-cent increase to student fees.
Alberta already has a very low rate of participation in post-secondary education and these additional cuts are expected to cause the number of students to decrease.
